Coming of age in the Swedish archipelago. This is one of Ingmar Bergman’s most important early films, portraying the transition from youth to adulthood, from dreams to reality, and from freedom to responsibility - all set against the magical backdrop of the Swedish archipelago. Harry and Monika meet one day at a café near their workplaces. He works in a warehouse, while she works for a greengrocer. Monika is playful and fearless, boldly inviting the more reserved Harry out with her. Before long, the two become a couple. Both struggle with the way they are treated by the older people around them - whether it’s half drunk parents, handsy delivery men, or narrow minded bosses. One day, Monika has had enough and runs away. Together, she and Harry escape in a small boat, heading toward islands, sunshine, and blue open water. “We’ve rebelled!!” they happily declare, but reality soon catches up with them. Both François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard were inspired by the film. Both later recreated the famous scene in which Monika turns and stares directly into the camera - and at us, the audience. Godard also wrote an enthusiastic tribute to Bergman in Cahiers du Cinéma, calling him Europe’s most original filmmaker. Good to know: * Language: Swedish * Subtitles: Swedish * Age limit: 15+
