We meet Colonel Birger Eriksen at Oscarsborg Fortress on the eve of the German invasion, April 9, 1940. An experienced but sidelined officer with few, inexperienced soldiers, he makes the independent decision to open fire on the cruiser Blücher when no clear orders come from high command. The film portrays both the dramatic hours at Oscarsborg and the aftermath in 1946, where Eriksen must defend his choices before a military commission: Was he right to defy orders – and to bear the responsibility alone?
