The Brief

An energetic and melodic vitamin injection in quartet form. Bassist Ellen Brekken, known from bands such as Hedvig Mollestad Trio and Tord Gustavsen Trio, takes the lead with A Tonic for the Troops. Drawing inspiration from bass legends like Marc Johnson, Ray Brown, Charles Mingus, and Scott LaFaro, the music features unison riffs, fast lines, open soundscapes, and playful rhythms within a modern mainstream jazz tradition. With a tightly knit ensemble, the band delivers high energy, strong melodies, swing, and powerful solo performances. Their debut album Ambush (2021) lived up to its promise as a true jazz vitamin boost, while the follow-up Realm of Opportunities (2023) confirms the level.
