ALUNE WADE: THE STAR BASSIST WHO SETS VENUES ON FIRE
There is one bassist who has been high on our wishlist for a return here at Cosmo these past few years. Now he's coming back, as part of our contribution to this year's Film fra Sør festival.
And he isn't just coming to demonstrate why he is considered one of the most respected bassists of his generation. He comes with a band and an expression that can turn Cosmopolite into a club in Paris, Dakar or New Orleans - in a single evening.
"J'ai pour mission de métisser les sons," he has said himself. – My mission is to blend the sounds.
Alune Wade doesn't really consider himself just a bassist. And although critics have called him a magician on bass, he is just as much a vocalist, composer, arranger, producer and bandleader. And live? He is the center of the room.
From Paris to Dakar and New York, Alune Wade has left his clear mark at the meeting point between African music and jazz. Along the way he has shared the stage with stars like Marcus Miller, Bobby McFerrin, Salif Keita and Oumou Sangaré, and live he is described as a musical powerhouse with the ability to set the whole room on fire.
The album African Fast Food has been on repeat here at the office since it came out. Wade cannot be put into a single musical box. Senegalese music? Jazz? Classical? Reggae? Taxuraan? Wade himself talks about "musique équitable" - fair music.
What Wade makes is, in his own words, "100 percent global and from all over the world."
