Amaro Freitas plays piano with the rhythms of Recife at its core - shaped by maracatu, frevo, and baião, and transformed into a raw, spiritual, and forward-looking jazz. His music reflects contemporary Brazil: deeply rooted in tradition, yet constantly moving forward. From the early breakthroughs Sangue Negro and Rasif to the award-winning Sankofa and his latest album Y’Y (2024), Freitas has developed an approach he describes as “decolonized” Brazilian music. History, identity, and nature converge in a rhythmic and uncompromising musical universe that has earned wide international recognition, most recently a Latin GRAMMY in 2025. “You can quite easily forget that the piano is a percussion instrument — but when you hear the playing of Amaro Freitas, it suddenly becomes very, very clear.” - Cerys Matthews, BBC Radio 6 Line-up: Amaro Freitas (piano), Rodrigo Braz (drums), Sidiel Vieira (double bass) Good to know: * Doors open at 7:00 PM * Age limit: 18+
