Timeless, acoustic jazz of almost weightless Nordic beauty. Scandinavian jazz at its very finest! Arcanum is a quartet of experienced musicians in brilliant form, with music that is both tender and has a clear forward direction. Behind the name we find four leading musicians – trumpeter Arve Henriksen and saxophonist Trygve Seim, bassist Anders Jormin from Sweden and Finnish drummer Ounaskari – who, echoing Ornette Coleman's quartet, display focused interplay and an inventive perspective. They have composed tracks both together and individually. On a foundation of folk music, from both north and east, they create modern jazz of the highest ECM quality. What awaits around the next corner may be unpredictable, but that this is a good space to be in is absolutely certain. Ounaskari and Jormin on drums and bass follow each other almost meditatively, and Henriksen and Seim always have the range to create the truly great emotions. The imagination needs no special effects; this is genuine acoustic jazz from the north as beautiful as it can be!
