In Unchained Melody, Mette Ingvartsen uses love songs from various eras as a musical anchor for the choreography. The movements follow the logic of water: ripples spread between the dancers, undercurrents pull them in new directions or into a whirlpool before calm returns and the surface stills. The dancers sing while they move, a physical practice that puts breath into play: the voice shifts, the tone breaks. Ingvartsen deliberately works with strong emotional affects, and in the meeting between song, feeling and dance, the performers navigate an ever-changing emotional sea. For Ingvartsen, love is more than a feeling; it is a social and political force that can wear down what is hard or dissolve what once seemed fixed. Unchained Melody is a performance where song, moods and movement flow into one another like the waves of the sea. The performance had its world premiere at the Bergen International Festival on 28 May, before its Oslo premiere during the Ultima Oslo Contemporary Music Festival at Dansens Hus.
