One of jazz's most sought-after pianists with his own trio We last heard the fantastic pianist Gerald Clayton at Victoria in May - in a delightful duo with John Scofield. But he is known here from before that, he has also been here with artists as diverse as Gretchen Parlato and Charles Lloyd, he is quite simply one of contemporary jazz's most sought-after pianists! But his good reputation rests just as much on his own compositions. On his newest album Ones & Twos he gathered Marquis Hill, Joel Ross, Elena Pinderhughes, Kendrick Scott and Kassa Overall to make a conceptual album about coexistence. Clayton took his starting point from the DJ world: The album's A and B sides are constructed to be played simultaneously – a nod to the moment when the DJ lets one track overlap the next. At Victoria we meet him in a more stripped-down trio format, with Clayton's piano supported by a rhythm section of the best kind, Joe Sanders on bass and Jeff Ballard behind the drums. We get wonderful compositions that move through post-bop, gospel and neo-soul, in a relaxed technical brilliance that radiates from the stage!
