The Brief

A hypnotic tribute to Misha. Three years ago, the album Funeral Dance was released - a tribute to the acclaimed Ukrainian pianist Mikhail “Misha” Alperin. He was Helge Lien’s teacher and mentor for many years, playing a key role in shaping the sound that the Helge Lien Trio is known for today. The music was originally written for a tribute concert the quartet performed at MaiJazz, one year after Alperin’s passing in 2018. For this project, Helge Lien and Tore Brunborg created entirely new music together - an organic flow of ideas and composed passages. The band found each other instantly, and the result was a great success, both live in Stavanger and later on record. Brunborg’s compositions felt perfectly tailored to the trio’s sound, and his beautiful saxophone tone led the group into new musical territories. Now, the four musicians have come together once again. This will be a chance to revisit this remarkable music - and perhaps hear something that points toward what’s next. What is certain is an evening of blue tones and melodic elegance, genuine emotion, and great power - not necessarily in volume, but in feeling.
