Description
Hauntingly beautiful guitar jazz combining complexity with emotional depth.
Lage Lund has achieved what many Norwegian musicians have dreamed of; breaking through in the USA! Lund went abroad to study at the prestigious Berklee, and later became the first electric guitarist ever to be accepted at the even more exclusive Juilliard School in New York. And it is here, in the city that never sleeps, that he has built himself up to become a prominent and recognized figure in the American jazz scene. The New York Times itself calls him "a guitarist who balances his abundant proficiencies with an aesthetic of gleaming calm". Kurt Rosenwinkel describes the Norwegian guitarist as frighteningly good!
In recent years, many young musicians here at home have greatly enjoyed Lund as a professor at the Norwegian Academy of Music. But he maintains his craft, melodic flair and status as a hardworking musician with tours and recordings both with others and in his own name. Three years ago the glittering album Ashes came out, where in addition to several Andrew Hill compositions you'll also find some fine versions of Carla Bley and Elliott Smith songs. He brings a new flame and creativity to the music, like an explosion held back only by a thin membrane of restraint. There is a melancholy here in addition to strongly burning love.
In this trio, Lage Lund is joined by two fantastic musicians: British bassist Orlando Le Fleming, who on his first solo album had Antonio Sanchez behind the drum kit, and American Jeff Ballard, who has played drums for Pat Metheny and Chick Corea. Previously we've said that Lage Lund is for guitar connoisseurs, but we now think this beautiful, acoustic jazz should be shared with everyone!
