Description
We've had her new album, SCORPIO, on repeat here at the office, and we have to admit we're hooked. There's a special magnetism in artists who have taken time to find out who they are, and who let that process seep into their music. Madison McFerrin is such an artist, and we're incredibly excited to invite her to Torshov!
SCORPIO springs from the experiences of a dissolved relationship. But McFerrin doesn't just sing about losing and finding herself again. She lets us hear what it sounds like when a person tries to put themselves back together. The result is a rare blend of tenderness, humor and an ever-stronger sense of her own power.
And yes, she is the daughter of jazz legend Bobby McFerrin. But that's not necessarily the most interesting part of the story. What fascinates us is how she has spent the years developing a musical language entirely her own. Her voice can be delicate and almost whispering one moment, then open up with a confidence that fills the whole room. The San Francisco-based artist, vocalist and songwriter moves between soul, jazz, R&B and a little dose of house, a combination we think many of you will dig!
Wonderland describes the album as groove-filled and subtly cinematic, with confident and exploratory songwriting. It's an apt description of an artist who masters the big vocal moments, but who also knows when it's more effective to hold back.
After a decade-long musical journey, a critically acclaimed second album release and a Tiny Desk performance that demonstrated how alive the material can become on stage, Madison McFerrin comes to Cosmopolite.
Expect neo-soul, jazz, R&B and vocal harmonies with warmth, playfulness and bite – from an artist who has spent her time finding her own voice, and who now knows exactly how to use it.
