A concert can contain much of what we experience in an entire life. Just as Knut Hamsun writes a whole life in his trilogy, we move this evening between extremes. We begin with Richard Strauss' Metamorphosen, written in the shadow of war. From there we move into the Viennese salon – to the music that arises where people meet – and further into Schubert's great chamber music. It may sound like two extremes. But it is the same life we encounter. Something has been lost. Something remains. And something continues, all by itself.
