New Jazz Underground

One of the hottest new groups in all of jazz right now. The trio New Jazz Underground was born in the summer of 2020, when the pandemic and lockdown made it impossible to play concerts in New York. So the Juilliard classmates Abdias Armenteros, Sebastian Rios and TJ Reddick played outdoors, in the park and on the street. The following year they began building an audience online, and today their YouTube channel has well over a hundred thousand subscribers who, through viral living-room jazz videos and meme-friendly song titles like "Modern jazz but its good", get an entrance to a jazz they might not otherwise have had. Saxophonist Abdias Armenteros is the youngest member of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, led by Wynton Marsalis. The tunes, mostly written by bassist Sebastian Rios and Armenteros, are steeped in swing and blues and relate with postmodern finesse to jazz history, something you can hear on the debut album Hoodies released earlier this year. New Jazz Underground are three strong and dynamic musicians who give American jazz a shot of vitamins from the inside out, and who not least appeal far beyond the usual audience. Christian McBride has called them "one of the hottest new groups in all of jazz right now". The future seems to be in safe hands.
