Description
Strikingly original and melodic, heading for essence.
Music like an exploding, expanding entity that fractions out into its own galaxies. But also with delicate passages that seek into their acoustic warmth. Vibraphonist Patricia Brennan's vibrant septet is a particularly exciting encounter in jazz with great breadth, interesting melodies, and a search for meaning and depth.
"Some of my favorite bands growing up were driven by powerful rhythms," Brennan says of her musical background. It began in Mexico with salsa ensembles like Fania All-Stars and Acerina y su Danzonera, and, perhaps more familiar to us, 70s horn-rockers like Earth Wind & Fire, Blood, Sweat & Tears, and Chicago. Although the warm vibraphone sound is of course central to this band, the two saxophonists Jon Irabagon and Mark Shim and trumpeter Adam O’Farrill are a prominent and colorful part of the music.
For this concert, much of the music is drawn from the 2024 release Breaking Stretch, an album that has received brilliant reviews in the international jazz press. We can promise you an intense evening with lots of energy, wonderful tunes, and utterly beautiful playing!
