Scottish jazz at its finest! On April 9, we’re being treated to a visit from some of the very best: Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival has specially curated an entire evening of outstanding jazz for us. Matt Carmichael – Dancing With Embers Edition Records is known for its sharp instinct for discovering exciting new artists, and in Scottish saxophonist Matt Carmichael they found a major talent. His music draws on the folk traditions and jazz he grew up with, while also reflecting influences from contemporary artists such as The Gloaming, Brad Mehldau and Bon Iver. Matt Carmichael – saxophone, Sarah-Jane Summers – violin, Chris Amer – guitar, Kjetil Mulelid – piano, Ali Watson – bass, Per Oddvar Johansen – drums Arild Andersen & Tommy Smith At the Edinburgh Jazz & Blues Festival in 2023, Arild Andersen and Tommy Smith unexpectedly became a duo when drummer Thomas Strønen missed the concert due to flight problems. Instead of cancelling, the two long-time collaborators turned the situation into something new and exciting, bringing their music into a freer musical dialogue. That conversation continues tonight with compositions from both Andersen’s and Smith’s catalog, performed as a powerful duo. Tommy Smith – saxophone, Arild Andersen – bass Harben Kay Quartet Award-winning tenor saxophonist Harben Kay is recognized as one of the leading creative voices in British jazz.
