Trondheim Jazz Orchestra & Karoline Wallace

Exploring the chemistry in conversations - together with Norway's top jazz orchestra! Norway's largest music grant, JazZtipendiatet, is awarded every year by Midtnorsk Jazzsenter, Moldejazz, Talent Norge and SpareBank 1 SMN during the Molde Jazz Festival. Last year the ambitious and forward-looking vocalist Karoline Wallace received the prize. She responds with brand new music and a concert together with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra during this year's festival, and also with a concert with us in October! Wallace has a background from the Grieg Academy in Bergen, studies in newer composition techniques, and a Nordic master's degree in The Composing Musician from Copenhagen, Gothenburg and Oslo. She is known for her open, playful and poetically exploratory musical universes. The commissioned work with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra is based on conversations – human and non-human – and how communication can be understood as more than words. "Conversation across species is not only about language, but about rhythm, resonance, chemistry, signals, patterns and silence," says Wallace. She will explore melodies, rhythms, textures and phrasings from different languages, find similarities and differences, and use these as musical building blocks in a work that asks the question: What does it really mean to communicate?
