A beloved tradition at Cinemateket returns every summer as we once again screen the Nordic region’s ultimate summer classic. The Apple War, the hugely popular comedy by Tage Danielsson, may seem like harmless fun filled with slapstick and visual gags, but it can also be seen as a tribute to anarchy and joyful madness in the otherwise grey, orderly social democratic Sweden of the 1960s. The plot itself is almost beside the point, but briefly put: a group of people gather on an island to celebrate a summer evening, only to run into trouble when trying to dock their sailboat at the pier. From this nearly banal premise unfolds a dazzling display of pure physical comedy. Scandinavian cinema has rarely, if ever, produced anything quite this delightfully chaotic. The film draws on a rich tradition of classic comedy, with clear inspirations from Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton and Marx Brothers. Good to know: * Language: Swedish * Subtitles: Swedish
