Heroism and love during the colonial wars. The year is 1757, in the midst of the conflict between France and England. Nathaniel, known as Hawkeye, is a white man raised among the Mohicans Chingachgook and Uncas. Together they rescue the officer’s daughters, Cora and Alice Munro, after an ambush, setting off on a perilous journey through the wilderness. As often in Michael Mann’s films, contrasts are central: Hawkeye, shaped by Indigenous culture, versus Magua, a Huron who has adopted the mindset of the colonial powers. Based on James Fenimore Cooper’s novel, the film is visually inspired by painter Thomas Cole and his grand depictions of the American landscape.
