Summer in Brooklyn. Sweltering days. Centered around Sal’s Pizzeria, we meet a colorful gallery of characters - from the Italian-American owner Sal and his two sons, to the underemployed delivery guy Mookie (played by Lee himself), the boombox-toting Radio Raheem, the outspoken agitator Buggin’ Out, and the aging dreamer Da Mayor. Tensions rise with the heat, and old grudges resurface, fueled by frustration and anger. After eight years of stagnation under Reagan, these eccentric characters awaken and begin to push back. Each believes they are doing the right thing, following Malcolm X’s words: “You’ve got to do the right thing.” But Spike Lee’s question is perhaps a different one - how do we know that what we’re doing is actually the right thing?
