The Brief

Erotikon’s status as the most renowned Czech film of the silent era was no coincidence. The filmmakers had a clear commercial strategy in mind, assembling an international cast and, not least, choosing a title that would attract audiences across language barriers. Director Gustav Machatý was also highly attuned to contemporary trends in cinema. Through an eclectic use of sophisticated visual techniques and Soviet-inspired montage, he elevated a relatively simple script into a poetic and sensual melodrama. Even so, the film did not achieve major commercial success – perhaps because its sexual themes were considered too provocative for audiences at the time. On a stormy night, the charismatic yet manipulative George is stranded at a railway station after missing his train. He is invited home by the station master, where he seduces Andrea, the beautiful and innocent daughter of the house, leaves her pregnant, and disappears the following morning. Devastated, Andrea flees her home and attempts to start a new life, but her troubles are far from over. The film was restored in 4K in 2025 by the Národní filmový archiv in collaboration with the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival at the Universal Production Partners laboratory. The restoration is based on a vintage 35mm print from the Département de la Charente collection preserved by CNC – Centre national du cinéma et de l’image animée, a vintage 35mm print preserved by the Cinémathèque royale de Belgique, as well as an acetate print and a duplicate negative. The restoration was funded by Milada Kučerová and Eduard Kučera.
