Description
Kubrick's final film and a tribute to Freud.
Stanley Kubrick had long wanted to film Arthur Schnitzler's erotic novel "Traumnovelle" and in the 70s considered making an explicitly pornographic adaptation. Only in the 90s did he realize his film plans, which had admittedly changed somewhat. Kubrick never worked particularly fast, so the shooting dragged on, and he just managed to finish editing the film before he died.
The project was marked by much secrecy, which did not calm the usual flood of rumors about Kubrick's peculiarities. There was also wild speculation about how far the film would go. Kubrick nevertheless considered the film to be his very best.
William and Alice are a beautiful, successful and monogamous couple. When one winter evening she confides in him a sexual fantasy involving another man, William is thrown into emotional, intellectual and sexual chaos that threatens his old identity. William lets himself be led by impulses and curiosity in an attempt to define his own limits and needs. What does he really want sexually? And what does Alice mean to him?
