Stanley Kubrick had long wanted to adapt Arthur Schnitzler’s erotic novel Traumnovelle and even considered in the 1970s creating an explicitly pornographic version. It was not until the 1990s that he was able to realize his film plans, which had, by then, changed somewhat. Kubrick never worked particularly quickly, so the filming dragged on, and he just managed to finish editing the film before he died. The project was shrouded in secrecy, which did nothing to calm the usual torrent of rumors about Kubrick’s peculiarities. There was also rampant speculation about how far the film would go. Kubrick himself considered it his very best work. William and Alice are a beautiful, successful, and monogamous couple. One winter evening, just before Christmas, she confides in him a sexual fantasy involving another man, throwing William into an emotional, intellectual, and sexual chaos that threatens his established identity. William follows his impulses and curiosity in an attempt to define his own boundaries and desires. What does he truly want sexually? And what does Alice mean to him?
