Fanny and Alexander is the chronicle of the Ekdahl family’s life. The story is told through the sensitive eyes of the boy Alexander, who in many ways serves as Bergman’s alter ego in this partly autobiographical film. With its broad and penetrating depiction of a boy’s upbringing, Fanny and Alexander is also a study of the formation and expression of artistic imagination. The film is heavily inspired by theater, with numerous clear references to plays such as August Strindberg’s A Dream Play and William Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
