The Roman general Maximus is Emperor Marcus Aurelius’ most loyal supporter. Marcus Aurelius’ son, Commodus, grows jealous of Maximus, betrays his father, and seizes power. Maximus is forced to flee but ends up enslaved. In captivity, he becomes a gladiator, and when he returns to Rome, he is determined to take revenge on Commodus. Ridley Scott’s Oscar-winning epic delivers a brilliant screenplay, magnificent cinematography, stunning set design, gripping action, a powerful score by Hans Zimmer, and, not least, Russell Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix at their absolute best.
