The original Gone in Sixty Seconds was made in 1974 by the somewhat eccentric car enthusiast H.B. Halicki, who wrote the script, directed, and played the lead role in the film. He died in a spectacular car stunt during the filming of a sequel in 1989, which was therefore never realized. We suspect that producer Jerry Bruckheimer (and the insurance company) did not allow Nicolas Cage to do all his own stunts when the remake was being made (even though he has later claimed this), because there are some absolutely insane driving scenes here, especially in the film's second half. We are in Los Angeles where perhaps the world's best car thief Memphis Raines (Cage) has retired and lives a boring life. He now runs a gas station and a go-cart track far out in the desert. His not-so-smart brother Kip (Giovanni Ribisi) has followed in his footsteps and has taken on an assignment to steal 50 valuable cars for the city's new gangster boss, the psychopathic wood fetishist Raymond Calitri. This assignment naturally goes completely wrong, and Calitri threatens to kill Kip unless Memphis completes the order list. The problem is that the cars are to be shipped to South America and the boat leaves in 72 hours. Thus, the old gang must be gathered quickly and polish rusty skills.
