The Brief

“Shut up and endure” were the first words the women heard when they arrived at Grini Prison Camp during World War II. In this play, we meet three prisoners and a female SS guard. The audience is given a powerful and realistic glimpse into life inside a Nazi prison camp – the physical and psychological violence, the pressure to betray others, and the complex everyday reality these women lived through. It offers an honest portrayal of a chapter in women’s history from WWII that has rarely been given much attention. The characters are fictional but inspired by real Norwegian women imprisoned at Grini - among them Dr. Bjørg Fodstad, author of “Brystkaramellene”, and journalist Lise Børsum, author of “Speilbilder”. The SS guard is inspired by the historical head of the women’s section at Grini. “Hold Ut” (Endure) is a collaboration between Det Norske Mikroteatret and Axel Hellstenius. This production differs from the theatre’s usual performances, both in form and expression. Even though it does not follow our traditional microtheatre format, we believe this is an important story that must be told.
