About friendship, creativity, love and ideals. Jules is a shy, complex and romantic Austrian, small and fair. Jim is a grounded, easygoing Frenchman, tall and dark. They meet in the cafés of Montparnasse in 1912, exchange poems and confidences, and become close friends. When an acquaintance shows them slides of ancient statues, they are captivated by the smile of one in particular and travel to a Greek island to find the original. Later, they recognize the same smile in a woman they meet, Catherine (Jeanne Moreau). This becomes the beginning of an unusual love triangle that unfolds over more than twenty years. Jules et Jim moves between humor and seriousness, lightness and weight, comedy and tragedy. A voiceover ties the often fragmented scenes together, while the camera remains attentive to the emotional shifts and the evolving relationships.
