A classic that scandalized audiences, critics, and censors upon its release in 1979. Monty Python’s Life of Brian is a masterful work of religious satire. It follows Brian, a man living in Judea at the time of Jesus, who is repeatedly mistaken for the Messiah. Forever the wrong man in the wrong place at the wrong time, Brian is swept into politics, imprisoned more than once, hailed as a prophet - and ultimately sentenced to crucifixion. The film outraged religious groups worldwide and was initially banned in Norway by the state censor for violating blasphemy laws. Norwegians eager to see it had to travel to Sweden, where it was famously marketed as “the film so funny it was banned in Norway.” When it was finally approved at home, it was only allowed with partial subtitles.
