The local theatre invites you to a double feature presenting two performances about the founder of Norway’s first labour movement. First, we present Marcus Thrane, a courtroom drama about the Supreme Court trial against Thrane and the workers’ associations he led. The fight for freedom and political rights for ordinary people faced fierce resistance from the Norwegian elite, and many lives were destroyed in the process. The play follows Marcus and his wife Josephine, trapped by a Norwegian state more concerned with protecting the system than delivering justice. After a short intermission, we present Who Should Grind the Coffee?, a 20 minute comedy written by Marcus Thrane himself for the Norwegian immigrant theatre in Chicago. The comedy explores the timeless question of how men and women should divide household chores, and remains just as relevant today as it was 150 years ago.
