Description
Join us at the magnificent National Gallery in London.
The National Gallery in London holds one of the world's foremost collections of European painting, with masterpieces by Leonardo da Vinci, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Turner and Van Gogh. The documentary My National Gallery opens the doors to this art treasure while exploring a simple question: Why can one particular work of art mean so much to us?
The film was made in connection with the National Gallery's 200th anniversary and tells the museum's history through the people who know it, work there and return to the collection. Staff together with art experts, visitors and well-known cultural figures select the work of art that means the most to them. Among the contributors are Michael Palin and Terry Gilliam.
Through these personal encounters with art, the film offers new ways to see and understand paintings: details one might otherwise overlook, the stories behind the works and how the same image can be experienced differently by different people. At the same time, the history of the National Gallery is traced over 200 years from its establishment in 1824 to the museum's role today.
