The Brief

A moving portrait of the ultimate Formula 1 star. Asif Kapadia has made a name for himself with several brilliant documentaries about legends whose lives have nonetheless been marked by tragedy. Senna was the first (followed by Amy and Diego Maradona) and tells the story of Ayrton Senna. This charismatic Brazilian started with go-karting as a teenager and rose to the top of the international Formula 1 scene in the 1980s, regarded as one of the greatest of all time. Kapadia has structured an extensive archive of material, including private footage, in a way that brings us very close to Senna. Not only do we gain insight into what drove him and the unique skills he possessed, but we also see the rivalries and conflicts that shaped Formula 1 at the time. At the same time, Senna is a film that requires no prior knowledge of Formula 1, as it is primarily a film about a man and his deep love for a fascinating but dangerous sport, which ultimately led to his far too early death.
