The Brief

Here we have one of the great action classics of the 1990s. The premise is simple but brilliant: a bus in Los Angeles is rigged with a bomb that will explode if its speed drops below 80 km/h. Police officer Jack Traven (Keanu Reeves), together with passenger Annie (Sandra Bullock), must keep the bus moving and find a way to disarm the bomb, while the psychopathic bomber Howard Payne (Dennis Hopper) pulls the strings. The film is a textbook example of high-concept action: one intense situation, exploited to the fullest. Jan de Bont, previously the cinematographer on films such as Die Hard, delivers tight direction with constant tension and impressive stunts. Speed grabs hold of you - and never lets go.
