The Rocketeer

One of the best comic book adaptations ever made - lighthearted, summery, and packed with great action. This was only the second feature film directed by Joe Johnston, who later went on to direct films such as Jumanji, October Sky, and Captain America: The First Avenger. The Rocketeer is based on the graphic novel of the same name and follows it closely, even using much of it as a storyboard with only a few rewrites. Unlike many comic book movies that mainly borrow the characters, The Rocketeer is a faithful adaptation of the full story. A young stunt pilot discovers a mysterious device hidden inside his airplane. The device turns out to be a jet pack invented by Howard Hughes, stolen by criminals working for Nazi agents. The result is a fun and well crafted adventure filled with clear heroes, sleazy villains, limited violence, spectacular action, and a satisfying happy ending.
