We are in a time reminiscent of the Viking Age. A mute one-eyed warrior is held captive. He is treated like an animal by everyone, except for a small slave boy. When One-Eye escapes, he takes the slave boy with him, and they join forces with a group of Christian crusaders. In Valhalla Rising, the extreme and the introverted have almost merged. On one hand, the film depicts incredibly brutal and bloody actions, on the other hand, it is an exploration of a person's inner journey. Winding Refn himself has characterized the film as 'mental-fiction' or a Viking film made as if it were a science fiction story. Definitely a film that is open to interpretation and best approached with an open, almost meditative mindset.
